The subject of Shawn’s caribou hunt is now closed.  Once battle lines are drawn and arrows start going back and forth it is time to quit.  In this case, it’s past time to quit.

There isn’t much argument about wanton waste: it’s illegal and it’s immoral.  The argument here has been whether these hunters acted in a wanton manner.  None of us having been there, we will never be able to resolve this question, regardless of how much Shawn’s messages seem to spell out this or that or another aspect of their hunt.

My concern here is that we pursue these discussions in a civil manner.  I understand that feelings run high on this issue and I have gone beyond my personal comfort zone to allow those thoughts to be expressed.  I have thrown out a few posts that got personal.  In retrospect, I should have thrown out more.  Ideas and behaviors are fair game on this forum; people are not.

The point of civil discussion is not civility for the sake of “niceness.”  Civil discussion allows issues to be thrashed out in such a way as to keep the circle as broad as possible.  As people, we can beat our breasts loudly or cast aspersions widely about one issue or another if we want, but I maintain that at the end of the day, we’ll find the number of listeners smaller and the breadth of our discussion diminished.

I want the circle of discussion about Alaska hunting on this forum to be large and diverse. Civility and mutual respect is my strategy for getting there.   I feel as if we have missed the mark in both of those on this one, and I take the blame for not having set guidelines for this discussion.

David
