Dave,

I agree with your idea of closing the caribou season during the rut.  This has long been a problem.  While I don't have an issue with folks interested only in the meat, or those interested only in the trophy, we currently operate under legal / ethical guidelines to salvage the entire animal.  As you know, it's not always easy to determine if a bull is in rut, and not all of them are in rut at the same time.  It therefore becomes a judgement call during which the size of the antlers is often the deciding factor in a shoot-no shoot situation.

Changing the season takes out most of the guesswork.
