Sealing difficulties....
Posted by Tony Dingess on Oct 20 2005
As some of you guys know (and disagree with), I do believe annuli can be counted given the right conditions, and we do take some rams on this basis. This being said, we do have the unusual genetics in the area we hunt, and it is extremely difficult to make a judgment call on many perfectly mature rams. The one ram that went 38" did receive a warning, and I found it quite ludicrous, but it is going to happen. The Palmer guys suggested the ram was not legal by age, and since I did not get to see the ram first-hand I can't say. One pic leads me to believe it is easily 8, and the 2 hunters that took these 38" and 39" rams are both professional sheep guides from Utah, and they assured me that both of the rams were 9 years old. In all honesty, I can't say. I had a young guide with these hunters, and I have to admit that it makes me nervous, and I don't like anything questionable at all. According to what the hunters told me, they attempted to show the Trooper the annuli and he simply told them he didn't know anything about that stuff, and then proceeded to tell them to take the horns home. Also I should say that the long time Cub pilot that flew the boys out could not believe that they even got a warning.

I still want to clarify to guys that the annuli business is not something I suggest that hunters run out and try, or hope for after a shot. I have let a lot of rams walk by that probably were 9 years old and older, and nothing beats being 100% sure on a given ram. Everyone did get a lot of laughs out of the sewer pipe evaluation technique that the guys are using to determine full curl though.
