Getting a brand new pair of binos?
Posted by kaboku68 on Oct 21 2005

I have lived out in the bush for a long time and have recently moved into Fairbanks.
Most of my old gear still works but many new technological changes have occurred.

I have decided to upgrade my binoculars. I have a pair of fully coated Redfield 10X50 autofocus binoculars that are pretty good and were great for the money and amount of abuse that I put them through.

I am ready to upgrade.

I have a B&L spotter but I have been thinking about going to
larger binos for intensive glassing operations.

I am wondering if anyone has purchased and used minox 15X58 BD roof prisms with a tripod? Presently they are on sale for a 1000$ with tripod adapter and case.

I also want to know if any body has tried 12X50 Nikon SE porros. I know that they are
not as bombproof but for 850$ they claim top shelf performance. I am a little worried about their durability though.

Some places have demos of the 8X42 zeiss fl glass Victory's for about 1100$.
Some birders claim that the fl glass is indeed better than anything previous, but
some rumors of quality control have arisen.

There is also a place selling Trinovid 12X50 Leicas for 1100$. I know that many of
the hunters discuss optics but I am wondering if any Alaskans can vouch for their
choices.

Any help, derision or commentary would be helpful at this stage.

Next: Yep, tried the Minox DennisM Oct 22 2005
