Genetics and such...
Posted by Tony Dingess on Oct 21 2005
akhunter,

I don't know if I would go so far as to say that there are areas where counting annuli is relatively easy, but certainly some rams are easier than others. I stood in Foster's taxidermy shop this summer and in all honesty, there was a couple of rams that I would not have wanted to count at less than 5 ft.! Variations are obviously endless. It can be pretty easy sometimes, but it does help tremendously to know the rams of a given area. We have had so many 160+ class rams that did not make full curl, by my strict definition, that it is sound to say the genetic predisposition of many rams in this area will be 12-13 years old before they make it. Derek Harbula's ram officially scored 167 5/8 BC but still 2-3 inches shy of full curl, although another 1-1 1/2 inches would have put it in the book. This still doesn't make me comfortable with having to make judgment call, and it certainly doesn't make me comfortable with my assistants having to do so.
