sheep sealin
Posted by TradBow on Oct 21 2005
Thanks for the kind words.  Seems to be a rare thing these days, I am at fault for this too at times.

I asked as I spent a good portion of the season looking over rams many I knew beyond a reasonable doubt that they were legal and still passed due to the sealin requirements.  I know the genetics in the two sheep spots I am in.  Fish and game as admitted any ram coming out 34-7/8ths curl or better is at minimum 8 years old.  My first ram I spent counting, for 3 hours at 50 yards or less, confirmed he was legal many times and shot him at 10 feet.  I agree this is not a method to be taken lightely.  I've had many opportunities at questionable rams at close distances and passed just becuase we didnt have the time to really look that ram over.

This fall I had the opportunity to sit in the Fairbanks office with a fella who killed his first ram.  Text book story, never hunted sheep, is now hooked.  Hard hard hunt, many miles etc etc etc.  His partner was a sheep vet of many years and many many hunts.  Upon walking into the office with this ram I looked the ram over pretty good while they were doing the preliminary paper work and agreed the ram was legal at 7 yrs old without mentioning my thoughts.

The person doing the test had both of us convience it wasn't a legal ram and didnt quite outright scald this guy, but he was awful shadowy about the situation making off comments on this and that.  The guy who shot the ram had to ask, IS THIS RAM LEGAL while it's laying on the table.  The biologist looked at him and said ues, but if it was any closer you'd be getting a ticket!  After the sealing was done we sat and talked outside for a bit, nice fella.

I've looked at Tony's pics over the years and in the back of my head I have questions.  After seeing these rams I had to ask the obivous, just how old are those rams out of curiosity.  The are they legal has ran through my mind many times.  I do however known one of the sealers in the office he's taking them to on a personal level (though I hope it's not the one who left ya with the warning LOL).

We had the opportunity to watch a fella groundcheck a ram in 02.  Boy I wish I could have shot a blunt from the heavans that day.  The old someone is watching you so tigten up arra.

The more information we can share (without giving out our secret haunts haha), the better we'll all be at this.  How we go about determining a ram is/isn't legal, knowing past history and the ram standing in front of us etc.  I was really hoping for a more longwinded answer but that's ok.

btw I never did say great pics to begin with.
