quality of a ram
Posted by ovis on Oct 21 2005
The old saying, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, holds true when different sheeep hunters view rams....what one hunter wouldn't even consider taking, another would treasure.  This past season, there was a client that began hunting late in life(late 40s), very fit, and decided that sheep were going to be his thing....he drew a once in a lifetime desert sheep tag....took a decent, representative ram....he then decided that he wanted a slam....all full body mounts.....this season, he wanted his Dall...he stated from the start that he wanted the first legal ram he came upon....he took an eight year old that he almost certainly could have bettered but he was very happy with what he took...told me it was the total experience of the hunt that was important to him....kind of a refreshing attitude....he spent the rest of his hunt hiking, picking berries and mushrooms.  Years ago, I, too, was quick to judge and state, "I wouldn't have taken that ram," too....different clients have different things that float their boat.....give me an old broomed off or broken horn ram that has seen the worst the north has to offer....in my eyes, that's a prize....but all of them are special to someone.  I might add that we had no problems sealing any of the rams this season....the people in the office in Fairbanks politely asked you take them to the loading dock around back and they did their job in a curteous and friendly matter.  One ram we aged at nine(also aged at 9 by an officer in the field)was deemed an eight year old by the biologist due to what she said was a false growth ring probably caused by an injury of some sort...learned something new that day.
