Leica Geovids
Posted by bizymocha on Oct 22 2005
JD,
I have used a pair of Leica Geovids on 3 hunts. Two for elk in western US and one for sheep in Alaska. At 32 oz. the 10x42's are very manageable - I use the bino buddy system which I think is very efficient. The convenience of a rangefinder system built into the binocular is very handy. No fumbling for the separate rangefinder.
If you do the math, the Leica rangfinder weighs 11 oz.. Subtract 11 from 32 ounces and you get 21 ounces. That is less than what a good 40mm objective binocular will weigh. So... you have a good chance of coming out ahead in weight. But the convenience factor is a huge positive. There is no degradation in glass quality and if the battery dies, the binocular still works like normal. I am sure the readers of this site know the value of superior optics when it saves time and energy. I for one will not be on a major hunting trip without my Geovids. Unfortunately they are priced just under $2000 at the current exchange rate! Good hunting.
