I have shot fox that go into a hole that rabbits have to work to get into.  They are tough animals and smart to boot.  If you saw him run away like that it will be a tough recovery...if at all.  Sometimes loss is part of the game, although unfortunate and we have to accept it and do our best to prevent/minimize the losses.  Don't beat yourself up too bad about it.
