same thing..different outcome
Posted by fullkurl on Oct 25 2005
I shot a deer on Kodiak @ 210 yards that began to slowly fold. I withheld a second shot due to the fact I really thought the buck was dying--and I didnt want to destroy anymore of the meat. I was thrilled about the size of the deer--antlers and body.
Rather than soimply dropping, to my surprise the deer turned and angled down the hill with a pronounced limp.  I was still certain he would go down. I suspected he had been lung hit and that the bullet had travelled through and a bone shard had affected one of his legs somehow. After the buck jumped over a bush and spooked another large buck, he vanished. I was cetain he was down in the tall grass/brush.
I searched for two hours, it was if he simply disappeared.  I was sick about wounding an unrecovered animal, and passed on several easily acquired bucks going back to camp. I glassed from up high hoping to spot the downed deer. I never saw him.
The next day I went back up and while I was glassing I noticed a large eight-point 1/2 mile down the ridge walking with a doe, the buck had a pronounced limp--it was him!
I stalked down the ridge (jumping up several deer enroute) and finally put a kill shot on him.  When I field dressed him I noticed his rear leg with a wound. I've never missed an animal so badly before. I still don't know how I missed his vitals, I was dead on him.
I was thankful I recovered him, I suspect he would have survived albeit with a limp, if a grizz didnt detect his abnormality.
Oddly this buck seemd unconcerned about his injury, he even tried to mount the unwilling doe he was with!

You may see that fox again, or you may find him.
