Electric Fences for Bear Protection (revisited)
Posted by Michael Strahan on Oct 30 2005
Hi folks,

Just revisiting an issue for some who may not be aware of it.  We get a lot of new visitors and members every month and I think this information could save someone’s life.

Today’s Anchorage Daily News contains a great article on electric fences for protection from bears.  Electric fences have been in use in many areas for years, and it seems that finally some companies are making portable setups that can easily be transported into the field for use on hunting trips.  Some of these units use two D-cell batteries for a power source and are supposed to be very effective.  Here’s the link to the ADN story.

You might also be interested in the NOLS video.  This shows exactly how the fences work and demonstrates their effectiveness with grizzlies:

Here are some ways you might consider using an electric fence in the field:

1. Around your kitchen area.

2. Around your sleeping area.

3. Around your boat (float trips).  Bears LOVE to bite inflatable boats.

Remember that using an electric fence is no substitute for keeping a clean camp!  Also remember to place your fence so it doesn’t short out!  It’s easy to develop a cavalier attitude toward bears, especially if you’re around them a lot.  That would be a big mistake.  Make sure your equipment is working correctly and be sure to have a backup firearm handy if you’re in a place where bears could be a problem.

Regards,

-Mike
