Scope, etc.
Posted by Michael Strahan on Nov 06 2005
John,

I use a detachable scope, and keep it in my pack.  This is for guiding; if I have to shoot it will usually be at close range where iron sights are better for me.  For hunting I would keep it on the rifle.  Shoulda mentioned that.

As far as the age thing, at 47 you'd think I'd have trimmed this down some by now.  I like having all my game bags with me for the whole animal, because it only takes a few minutes for flies to lay eggs on it.  It goes in a bag right off the animal.  Also, birds are less likely to mess with it (and on it) if it's in a bag.  I have some Dall sheep pictures from a friend of mine.  It took him 45 minutes or so to get to the animal and the birds had already torn it up pretty bad.  Anyway for me this could be an easy way to lose meat.  I might THINK I'll make it back that afternoon with the rest of the bags, but more than once it didn't work out that way.  I have several "Alaska Axioms" that stick in my mind;

1.  It's farther than you think.

2.  It will take longer than you think.

3.  It's heavier than you think.

4.  You're tougher than you think.

5.  It will be colder than you think.

And last of all...

6.  It will ALWAYS cost more than you think!

I don't ALWAYS bring the stove; but I'll toss it in if it looks like a better than even chance at overnighting.  Even hot water can warm a guy up in the middle of a cold night...

-Mike
