You might consider speaking with the supervisor about this.  Though I'm not one to generally bash the Troopers (I come from a law enforcement family), I do know that there are some over-zealous cops out there.  The best way to correct that is by calmly, rationally telling your story (as you have here) to someone who can make it change.  Rants and raves usually get the deaf ear.

I'm glad it worked out, but it could have been different.  My gut instinct is that your situation borders on illegal search, except that you volunteered some key information that you probably didn't have to volunteer.  I'm no expert though.  Maybe he did have "probably cause".
