Posted by turner1978 on Nov 24 2005 My cousin and I are interested in going on a drop hunt in Alaska and we haven't picked out an outfitter yet but we have an idea on how they work. The out fitter puts you on a plane and flys you out into a remote are and drops you off. Some outfitters even provide the camp and tents and some of the gear for you. Most of the time you can only bring 80lbs or less gear with you and you are on your owne for 5-10 days. When you get your animal you have to pack it to the camp/landing strip and have your gear ready when the plane comes back to get you. I am guessing that the outfitter has some way of checking in on the hunters here and there through out the hunt but not sure. My cousin and I both have 300 RUM rifles and are trying to decide between pepperspray or light weight 44mag pistols for defence against bears. I am thinking that the pepper spray would be the better choice. Any suggestions on which brand/type of spray works best. Any suggestions on outfitters/gear to take. I live in Idaho and we have some grizzly bears down here, but nowhere near as many as you do up north, and we are farely familiar with how to avoid grizzlys and how to react but have never actually had an encounter as of yet. Our first drop hunt is gonna be for moose and/or caribou/black bear. Where we hunt we don't get much moisture compared to Alaska and we are wondering how much moisture you gte in september and what gear you suggest for clothing. Thankyou in advance for any advice.
