Response to 44 Mag

jklingel,
I toted a Colt Anaconda around for years big 6 1/2" barrel (weighed a ton) and I for a long time thought if I ever needed it I would be ready. Years later I started bowhunting bears, black and grizzly and I have come to the conclusion that if I am going to get ate, I am going to get ate! I have seen bears of both species shot with everything from an arrow to a revolver to a heavy magnum caliber rifle and none of the above except for one has dropped one in its tracks( that one was spine shot with an arrow). If a bear is coming when you least expect it you are screwed no matter what, no matter what people say (and this is strictly my opinion) you are not going to draw anything from any holster in time to react to the phenomenal speed of these critters small or large makes no difference. And if you have time to react to a bear that is investigating you which is what most do in my experience they dont charge from a long distance, they close the distance to investigate and the bluff charges are usually inside 30-40 yards I would much rather have a high caliber magnum rifle ready for that moment than any pistol. I had two real close encounters last year ,one with a choclate brown Boar Grizz that I was stalking with my bow, to make a long story short the bear busted me at 56 yards and came straight at me walking to 25 yards at which time I let an arrow fly and my drop away arrow rest malfunctioned and I missed the bear by a couple feet short and left of him. He was watching me the entire time he walked towards me, the whole time I drew my bow back and even after the shot which he truly did not like. He came a few strides closer to me and woofed at me 3 times real fast and bolted like a freight train through the spruce to my right, he moved so fast that it blew me away this was a 500 lb bear nothing like a coastal brownie but that 500 lbs was MOVING! If he wanted me, he had me and my partner, even the 12 gauge slug gun behind me wasnt stopping him. You could say to me do I think the 12 gauge slug gun my buddy had behind me was sufficient and my answer is no! As far as I am concerned If its my time its my time 458 Lott, 375 H&H, 338 WM,500 S&W, 44 Mag. If its your time its your time and you know what thats okay with me! I could die in a wreck every day of every week that I get in my truck and hit the highway the way our resident jackasses drive, it happens on a regular basis. In the meantime I cherish every minute I spend in the woods! You try and act smart, stay aware of your surroundings, keep a clean camp, become proficient with whatever weapon you hunt with and enjoy every chance you get to be in the awesome country that we live in(Alaska). I dont want to start a big debate on bear knockdown power guns because I dont care and I am not interested, people ought not spend a whole bunch of time worrying about the back up weapon in case they see a bear, be thankful and hopeful that you do. They are amazing creatures and truly the top of the food chain in our continent, its a spiritual experience to even be up close with one. Just my take. I am headed to the peninsula for nice big brownie next spring and I count every minute till I get there. My weapon of choice for this adventure is a 338 WinMag. Good Hunting!
