Locked Gun Cases & Other Regulations
Posted by Michael Strahan on Nov 25 2005
Hi folks,

In reading through this thread I see that there are some different ideas floating around about whether or not you should lock your gun case.  For clarification, I'd like to mention that the regulations on air travel come from several sources, and not all of them agree with each other.  TSA regulations may prohibit something that is allowed by your airlines' policy and vice-versa.  In such cases it's best to take the conservative approach.  If one organization prohibits something, go with the most restrictive regulation.

As far as locks go, current TSA regs require gun cases to be locked.  But TSA may want to inspect the firearm.  Depending on the setup of your airport, you may or may not get the opportunity to be there when the inspection takes place.  This is because this entire inspection process, including the X-ray machines, etc. did not exist before 9/11.  Therefore, some airports had to cram inspection stations and related screening equipment in sometimes obscure and out-of-the-way places.  Sometimes those places are areas where you cannot go.  So, buy TSA-approved locks and lock your gun cases.  TSA has a way to open such locks without damaging them.

And as another poster mentioned, print the current TSA regulations, along with your airlines' Contract of Carriage and other related regulations.  Have those with you for reference in case you run into an inexperienced agent.

Finally, keep in mind that these regulations change constantly.  So just because your uncle from Duluth did something last year doesn't mean you'll be allowed to do it this year.  You have to check this stuff constantly.

Hope this helps!

-Mike
