bear spray
Posted by cory100 on Nov 25 2005
Having used bear spray on a bear before I will say it can be of value.  If a bear really wants to take a piece out of you it is likely you wont even have time to properly react, especially with a rifle strapped on your shoulder.  That is where a properly placed can of spray can help.  If you can quickly draw your spray and deter a bear for 10, 15, 30 seconds it will allow you draw your rifle and properly prepare to defend yourself.  I like to carry both (if the hunt allows)  I place my spray on my pack strap and leave the holster top open in the brush or beary areas.  I would only purchase counter assault or UDAP brands.  If you do get a can practice drawing it so your comfortable.  Also if you have to use it be very very careful on wind direction and your aim.  Getting this junk on yourself, which I have also done is a very unpleasant experience, and could ruin your hunt.  Remember this stuff is not lethal, and there is instances where it has not worked.  There is also instances in the lower 48 of "conditioned" bears turning there heads on spray, thereby getting sprayed on their hinds and not affecting there intentions.  The Inter Agency Grizzly Bear council www.igbc.com (i think) used to display studies on spray, fences, and other deterents
