POW's roads
Posted by muskeg on Nov 28 2005
All the roads on POW are a good thing and a bad thing. POW is no longer an Alaskan 'wilderness' hunt. It has been heavely logged and roaded.

There are wilderness areas on POW but it is costly to get out there ... by plane or vessel ... and then you are kinda stuck hunting one bay or area, that you are dropped off at. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

The reason POW is so popular, is the road system and the infrasturcture set up for the non-local-resident hunter to be able to get around and have lodging. But anymore you are going to have company while hunting the road system. You don't have to primarily hunt from the roads, like many hunters do, but use the road system to access huntable areas. But there are Jumbo's taken standing right next to the road (or even on the road) every season. Alaska dosen't have many road hunting laws, but there are a few. There are citations issued every season for road hunting type violations.

As the POW kill continues to go up, the ADF&G is now looking at a restriction of some sort to slow it down a little. Like the cap put on Kuiu a few years back. Once the kill reaches a certain level then it is closed to the non-ak-resident hunter.

The new Guide law that goes into affect on Dec 5th will slow the kill down somewhat, probably. The 'transporter' type hunt rules will change. The illeagle guiding (self guided transporter) that has been going on, making POW the poster child for illeagle Black Bear hunting, will probably be slowed down under the new law. We will see.
