old solo hunter
Posted by rainydayhunter on Dec 01 2005
Hello Spawner:

I'm still a young 62 but I just retired last week.  I usually hunt elk, deer, and black bear alone but I still go out with my hunting buddies at least once a year.  Next year, I'll be taking two of my young sons on a float trip but we haven't yet decided whether to hunt or not.

I hunt alone more and more now than I did in my 40s mainly because some of my hunting buddies, those of my age, don't want to or are no longer capable of hiking out more than half a mile from their SUV.  To me, losing oneself in the wilderness is the best way to enjoy Nature.  I don't mean getting desperately lost but to go wherever your soul and your feet want to take you yet knowing that you can always get back to where you have to be.

To keep in shape I do a lot of walking at a brisk pace with my wife who can set a blistering pace since she's 29 years my junior.  About 3 months before I'm to go on my "expedition" I'll start to carry a backpack loading it progressively heavier until I can carry 60 to 70 pounds 7 to 10 miles thrice or four times weekly.  Prior to all this I  have a complete physical and stress test.

Just as important as physical conditioning is knowing one's limitations.  We all like to think that we can still do what we once did when we were in our 30s or 40s but, sadly, that is not the case.

happy hunting,
rainydayhunter
