Going Solo
Posted by PastorBob on Dec 01 2005
Spawner, It's going to depend a lot on your condition. I'm 66 and have done a lot of solo hunting over the years. The experience is quite different between going solo or with buddies and I enjoy both. I'm more careful when solo as I don't want to break a leg when I’m out there by myself. I set up two tents, one for me and one for the bear. I keep all the food and good smelling stuff in the one for the bear. If I’m by the water I will carry a handheld marine radio with me for emergencies but I have never had to use it. Now, I probably would rent a satellite phone. Going solo when your older isn't so bad, you just do what you are able to do. Nothing to prove, no one to keep up with. I took my dad caribou hunting when he was in his 70's and he never got too far from camp but we would hunt a little for ptarmigan around camp and he really liked going. Deer hunting on Kodiak with younger guys I didn’t climb to the top of the near by hills like they did but I didn’t have any trouble getting as many deer as I wanted. As I think about it, most of my really memorable trips were solo hunts. There is still a lot of living to do - "do not go gentle into that good night."
