[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] I hear you RobR Posted by AlaskaCub on Dec 02 2005 I am just saying (IMO)that most guys are going to be hunting in groups especially non-residents as I remember when I first came to Alaska and everybody did there best to terrify me about bears and I bought that 44mag in the first month I lived here payed non-resident fees and started planning fishing trips and hunts and carried that thing everywhere. In these guys case if there is somebody there with a large Magnum round that can shoot the bear that attacks a partner its going to be far more effective than most peoples effort to retrieve a holstered side arm in the midst of the battle. I have seen black bears enagage in battle on hind legs at 3 steps from me and there strength is amazing and these bears are a fraction of the size of their big brother grizzly/brown bear, I am sure you have seen what a skinned bear looks like they are impressive. I like you agree that you must have some sort of contingency plan for that one bad encounter but the 300 Ultra Mag to me is far better than a pistol. I am headed to the peninsula this spring how familiar are you with the Kejulik river?
