The archives are full of bear protection info...
Posted by Michael Strahan on Dec 05 2005
Hunter,

Do a search through the hunting forum archives on this site; this subject has been all but beaten to death already.  Nothing wrong with bringing it up again though, lots of new folks here these days, and there's bound to be a lot of repeat stuff.

That said, I'd suggest leaving the handgun at home and just use your rifle, assuming you have a caliber satisfactory for bear.  If you're with friends, you'll have plenty of long guns around; I think anything more than that is overkill in my view.  Others have different ideas; I'd ask them how much experience they have hunting in Alaska before I take it all to the bank though.  You can be anybody on the internet, and there are a lot of folks here simply voicing their opinions.  Some of them have never hunted Alaska (or have limited experience), so be careful where you get your info.  Excellent question; good luck on your hunt!

Regards,

-Mike
