second what strahan says
Posted by AlaskaCub on Dec 05 2005
There is plenty of past posts on this subject even an older memorandum that was created by the state about calibers of weapons for defense against bears. If I recall the 375 was the weapon with the best rating but this memorandum was about brown bear country. I will second what strahan says about the rifle. The ballistics from a 44 mag compared to a .30 caliber or bigger magnum round are not even comparable. I told another group that was asking about the same topic for a drop hunt they were planning, the same thing I would suggest to you , if it makes you feel safer having a 50oz pistol on your side then bring it, find the heaviest load you can and load it up, this will mostly be for your personal confidence that a bear wont get you but a 30-06, 300 win mag, 338 win mag even a 7mag with quality bullets (these are common moose guns)will all kill a griz a lot better than that pistol that is making you feel safer. I am saying this from past experience, 10 years ago when I came to Alaska I did exactly what I suggested you do with carrying a pistol and eventually realized that the rifle is much better and quit carrying it. I do keep a pistol in the boat when I am fishing on the river just because I cant fish with a rifle on my back thats way uncomfortable and I carry a shotgun with slugs when we hunt black bears over bait with a bow and grizzles with a bow up north. These are all close encounter situations when bow hunting and I can weild a 18" barrell 12 gauge in close quarters much faster than a rifle. Enjoy Alaska and hope you get to see a bear as they are not so easy to find as people from down south think, they are not hiding under every stump waiting in Ambush!
