[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] similar Posted by jklingel on Dec 05 2005 I was in a 12' raft, floating down the Gulkana many years ago w/ my two small sons. We portaged most of the crap around the falls, and I figured I'd run the raft through solo so as not to unnecesarily endanger their lives. All was well until about 30' from the falls (high water; roaring along). I glanced over at my boys, walking along the bank, to make sure they were OK. When I got my eyes back to where they should have been, I was already entering the falls, sideways. As I plopped over the falls, all seemed well until the falls dragged my left oar, and then left tube, under. The boat was rather rapidly filling with water and doing a sideways wheelie. I jumped to the right tube, way up in the air, nice and dry, and hung on. I envisioned getting sucked under with the raft on top of me, and figured I'd float with it as needed, and pray. In a split second the raft popped out of the falls, and I casually drifted along. After bailing a few thousand gallons of water, we reloaded and floated along..... flat this time.
