bear protection
Posted by sourdough on Dec 05 2005
yeah ok sidearms are nice. You have to have time to get em out. I'd been hunting for about 20 years and never had to worry about bears. Sure, seen some on gut piles and come nose to nose with a few on the riverbanks or sand bars over on the west side, but never had a problem with hunting. I dont need to worry, Im a crack shot. Open sights, scope..dont matter, I'll never have a problem. Well about 20 years ago at the base of the Alaska range not too far from Beluga Lake as I was fishing for silvers I heard a twig snap. In the time it took me to turn around the bear was on me. I had my trusty .300 WinMag with me of course, 20 feet away. I frantically pounded the snot out of that big brown snout with my bare hands and all the rocks and crap I could grab and never once thought I would live through it. My oldest boy stood by and helplessly watched as his dad was about to be drug off by this very large bear. He shouldered my rifle but was afraid to shoot, and Im glad he didnt or I would have been killed for sure. Obviously, I lived. I am scarred a little on the outside, and a whole lot smarter upstairs now. First of all, Mr. Strahan, and AlaskaCub I agree with both of you. I will only add this. Hunt and fish smart. Keep your eyes open always, carry what you shoot well. I dont care what kind of cannon you keep close to your chest, if you dont have time to pull it out it will do you no good at all. I would personally rather have a good rifle with open sights than a handgun anyday of the week, but that's just me.
