I agree with you on the partner thing 100%. A good hunting partner and common sense goes a long ways. I have put myself in a lot situations that easily could have made the ADN but they really arent more than enjoying what Alaska has to offer. I know so many guys that have lived here a majority of their life and have serious phobias about bears and therefore limit their outdoor adventures to sleeping in travel trailers and never straying far from their 4 wheeler. I love the outdoors too much, if you are not crawling through some of the bear tunnels down by byers creek to fish for late salmon runs, then your bumping into grizzlies while walking in a trance with a 50 lb pack on your back up a drainage in the Brooks hunting sheep with your rifle strapped to the side of your frame pack( that happened twice to me in an hour in the fall of 03) or walking in on bears on a bait station that only go far enough from the barrell to allow you to fill it. I can also tell you that stalking grizzlies with a bow to within 20 yards definately has a certain level of risk I had one of those almost go bad wrong last year. Those are the thrills of living in this state, and a guy has to always be aware of his surroundings, use common sense when the conditions allow and sometimes you arent even in a risky situation and you bump into critters you didn't expect to see. I guess you have to accept a certain level of risk in anything we do. I hope to never have the kind of encounter you did but a fellow cant say that it will never happen to me because thats something you have no control over. We are on top of the food chain sometimes with our modern weapons, optics, and ammo but when the conditions are right and they usually are the critters have the element of suprise.
