Dont mess with archery Equipment the day you leave
Posted by AlaskaCub on Dec 05 2005
Last spring I shot probably 1000 arrows at distances out to 70 yards with my new bow and had all the confidence in the world that I could kill anything out to 60 yards unless the wind was blowing. I had my arrows spun with broadheads on them all perfect hunting arrows marked equipment ready to go and on the day I left for the Brooks I adjusted the string for my drop away rest from a string loop knot on the cable to installed in the cable and served, I had checked it and the adjustment on the rest was perfect at full draw. I put it in the case and off we went. On the third day I spotted a beautiful choclate brown older griz boar and off we went . I am pretty sure that he winded us at about 80 yards and he dissappeared we started looking for him and found that he had circled back and was on the trail he had come from . No biggy we readjusted the stalk and headed after him.I had him at 56 yards in the range finder feeding and quartering towards me I needed him to turn but I also didn't like the agle of my shot as I was in a gully and didn't have good footing,I decided we should try to get to the other side of the wash and I would be at 40 yards and less round rock to stand on. We agreed I turned to go down to the bottom of the wash and one of the arrow nocks in my hip quiver hit one of the larger rocks and made ticking sound. We froze and he was onto us, he dialed us right in and we froze he stood up trying to wind us, dropped to all fours and started bee lining right for us, I knew he was just trying to check us out to see what we were but as he got closer and closer I got a little worried. At 25 yards he turned and started moving to my right, he was looking right threw me I could not move. As soon as he went behind the only spruce tree I drew and he caught me drawing and stopped I put my 20 pin right above his shoulder and let the arrow fly I knew that bear was dead right up untill I saw the sparks my arrow hit 2 feet short and 2 feet left of him. I didn't know what had happened he bolted about 3 yards and turned right toward us I tried to nock another arrow and this time when I drew he woofed at us was gone in a blur. I later found out that the now wet waxed string had pulled through my cable slightly for my drop away rest, therefore my arrow did not even rise off the shelf of my bow when I drew back. The arrow made contact with the shelf and the arrow was aiming down when I released it never came up.
The moral of the story is dont mess with your equipment right before a hunt and I know this!I have given buddies sh$T about it and preach it to death, what chemical reaction took place for me to break a cardinal rule I dont know. That was a P&Y bear with a big head and a beautiful hide. The worst part is that the entire stalk and the shot is on video as well as the look of dismay and my reaction after the bear left, some of my words will have to be edited! I tell myself that I missed for a reason that the bear would have charged us if I hit it and a hundred other excuses that make me feel better about missing. The truth is that I cant wait for my spring peninsula hunt as I have been wanting to do this hunt for several years and if I had shot my bear last year I would not be able to do it for 4 more years.I believe in Fate!
