Handgun bear protection
Posted by Kirk on Dec 05 2005
hunter1339, you have a valid question, don't be ashamed to have asked it and yes, the archives do hold a lot of information but unless you're familiar with the site how were you to know.   I don't live in Alaska and I haven't been mauled by a bear.  I have hunted in Alaska and frankly, I'm a heck of a lot more concerned with bears in the lower 48.  I have hunted with several guides (more than just a couple) that have encountered mad grizzlies at close range.   In the areas where I hunt around Yellowstone it is unusual if someone doesn't see a grizzly everyday. In some areas they're a constant nuisance while hunting and in camp. These bears have absolutely no fear of humans since they've been protected for about 30 years.    The guides carry anything from shotguns with slugs, .45-70s, to .44 mags to nothing but spray. The cooks even carry shotguns everywhere they go.   I know a guide that carried a .44 that saved his life, so they do have some value.   He was guiding a bow hunter for elk and was jumped by a sow grizzly, she had him down when the bow hunter sprayed her in the face, this gave the guide enough time to unholster and put the .44 in the bears ear and end the fight.   While this might be one of the few times a handgun would be the best form of protection, it is an example that they aren't completely worthless.
