Thanks, Jake!

Jake,

Your observations on the archives is pretty sharp.  What some folks may not realize is that the reason some of us recommend a search there is because we've already answered that question.  Sometimes several times.  I can't speak for the others, but when I write on something for the first time here, I'm usually more thorough than I am in subsequent posts on the same topic.  There are lots of reasons for that, but the point is that in order to provide the best information possible, I encourage folks to check the archives because there's literally a wealth of information there.  That's the whole reason why David went to the time and expense of archiving this information for us!

So... suggesting a look at the archives isn't a brush-off at all.  On the contrary, it's a recommendation to take advantage of one of the best research tools on this website.  In this month's Hunter's Tips (due out any day) I suggest using the archives as a solid first step in researching a new hunting area.  Two years ago I would have never made such a recommendation, but now the content level is up there to the point that the archives have become a tremendous tool for hunt planning.  What's regrettable is that we didn't start archiving sooner; a lot of really good stuff has been forever lost.

Anyway, thanks for your insights on this.  You sound like a pretty smart guy, and I'm sure you realize that some of the negativity that comes in now and then is coming from people with other agendas besides providing information or talking about our values.  Thanks again for your observations!  It's always encouraging to see how folks are using this site.  I'm especially encouraged by folks who come back and tell us that they planned their first Alaska hunt with info gathered here.  That's what it's all about!

-Mike
