Another opinion

I've seen a lot of bears up close over the years but have never been charged by one. I usually try to carry a rifle when in bear country but do not always pack a firearm.
I think a lot of bears are killed every year in self-defense that do not have to die. I do not blame the shooters though, because these bears are usually very close to the shooter who was uncomfortable enough to shoot while they have a chance.
I do agree with the folks who say if a bear charges you will likely not have a chance to get off more than one shot. And if your pistol is already holstered, you likely will not get it out.
That being said. I am thinking about getting a small, light, 44 mag. that I could carry and possibly get out if actually attacked. I am not thinking about preventing an attack but having something to use if a bear is actually chewing on me. It would be better than a knife.
Most attacks are prevented by common "bear" sense as someone else posted. All the close encounters that I have had with brown, grizzly, and blacks have ended up the with bears either running away (blacks), or sauntering away, (browns and grizzlies).
I have pretty much decided that unless I am defending other people beside myself, I will not shoot until the bear is so close I cannot miss. Then I know I will likely make contact and get hurt, but hopefully survive.
