Thanks, Byron!

Byron,

A friend of mine introduced me to that idea some years ago, but his motives were different.  He didn't want the troopers finding his kills.  It wasn't that he was doing anything illegal, he just didn't want to be hassled by over-zealous officers.  Easier for him to just cover it up and move on.  He also did a good job of documenting the salvage of the animal, packing it out, and even took pics of the meat hanging on the meat pole.

I like your perspective on this because it addresses something that has always bothered me a bit.  I never did like the idea of leaving the spine, head, hide, lower legs and viscera scattered about, but have usually done that.  My thought was that it would make it easier for scavengers and predators to deal with it.  On the other hand, there's a certain loss of dignity concerning the animal that you touched on with the treatment of your kills that I've been missing.  I like that.  Even when we salvage everything on the bone (I bring out the ribs on the bone too), there's quite a bit of material left there.

I appreciate you mentioning respect for the animal.  This is not something we can write laws about, but I think we do try to express those thoughts through some of our laws.  This is part of what I was trying to say, and what I try to impress on my children.

Regards,

-Mike
