Good post Mike. Thanks for bringing this subject up.
I think your bio friend has some good points. What are the effects on the environment of transporting game meat and other parts over long distances........vs. leaving the parts to return to the ground they sprang from.
There was a time when each hunter, or group of hunters, was able to choose which parts of their kill they wished to keep and use, and which parts they did not have a viable use for at that time. They were also able to choose just how they wished to use their kill.....i.e., eat, use for tools, clothing, trade, etc. Tho I wouldn't want large numbers of hunters coming to alaska just to kill an animal, take a picture, and let it rot, I would like to see our laws allow more leeway in how we benefit from the spoils of our kill.
There seems to be much agreement here that salvaging meat is important. Yet no one has a problem with leaving other valuable parts behind. Capes can be sold. Hides turned into clothing or handicrafts. Antlers can also be sold legally. Why is it Ok to leave a thousand bucks worth of horn and hide behind, but not OK to leave a grand worth of meat? If hunters truly respect their quarry, shouldn't they show that respect by salvaging as much of the animal as can be used?
Good food for thought Mr. Strahan.
