Welcome to Guiding!
Posted by Michael Strahan on Dec 08 2005
Matt,

One of the things my dad taught me was to never hunt with someone you don't know, a lesson frequently reinforced with a recital of my grandfather's final hunt during which he was shot to death by an individual who was a stranger to everyone but one guy on their annual deer hunt.  I never had the opportunity to meet my grandfather, by the way.  He died seven months before I was born.

But despite pop's advice, I started guiding and guess what?  EVERYBODY I hunted with was a complete stranger!  While I'd land short of saying you should NEVER do it, I can tell you there's a lot of wisdom in hunting with someone you know.

Good hunting partners are hard to find; I hunted with one guy for seventeen years, and we got to that place where we each knew what the other person was thinking.  If one or the other of us was late back to camp, the one stumbling around the woods knew there would be a lantern out on the gravel bar to home in on after dark, and the other guy wouldn't be sleeping much.  Often, dinner would be prepared and set aside for your return.  That's the sort of person you want out there in the wild and wooly!

Good luck in your search!

-Mike
