Great Thread
Posted by Phil on Dec 08 2005
I'm busy with 8th grade science papers so I haven't had a lot of time to post but this is just too good:):)
Mike - Great post!!! You have succeeded in starting a thread about a contentious subject and everyone has been really respectful. I hope this continues that effort. What follows are just some of my thoughts as a non-resident.
Byron - I know that "happy/sad" feeling very well. I suspect a lot of hunters share that common experience.
As some pointed out, even Alaska isn't consistent in their salvage laws. My wife and I enjoyed my 1 spring black bear yet I was not required to salvage rib, some neck, and flank meat. As Mike pointed out, it's pretty hard to be perfectly consistent. Just for comparison, Wyoming requires salvage of 4 quarters and the back-straps. That includes elk and moose as well as smaller animals.
I have some concern about taking meat "home" when you are a non-resident hunter. Fortunately I have several friends living in Alaska so human use of game meat is never a problem. Lets look at this. My "family" consists of my wife and me. I like to hunt moose (don't ask why). We could never eat all the meat from even one moose. So, should I spend several hundred dollars to transport all my moose meat home and then give it to the food pantry? I consider that a waste of hard-earned dollars. I see absolutely no legal or ethical problem with giving it to hungry people living in Alaska. I do bring all the meat to a center where it can be distributed. Seems ethical to me.
Mike (again) - I don't even try to defend my hunting anymore. Next time you are asked, try this. "Sure I'm a hunter. Humans have been hunters for thousands of years. Why aren't you a hunter?" BTW, I figure my cost of game meat at closer to $20 per pound than $5.
I'm going to re-read some of the posts and see if I can come up with something reasonable about our impact on the animal environment. Until I get a chance to do that, here is the statement I put on the bottom of my ecology tests for my students to think about.
