[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] Use it all Posted by twoatlow8 on Dec 09 2005 Let me start by saying I have only been to Ak once and don’t have near the hunting experience hunting that most of you seem to have. I love the outdoors and love to hunt. I feel like it should be a right. I know, I know, it is a privilege but I imagine that it got that way from people abusing their rights. I would love to hunt when I come Alaska again but it is very expensive. I could probably afford to come and kill a caribou, or moose but I couldn’t afford to get it ALL back....so instead of gorging on tenderloin, sending scrap meat to the food bank, and leaving the rest to the scavengers, I fish and watch caribou (and am satisfied except for the steak part). I don’t qualify this as not being able to hunt for financial reasons but rather choosing not to hunt for moral reasons. If I kill an animal, It is my moral obligation to that animal to use every bit of it that I can possibly use. Call it frugality, but after the meat is gone, antlers and hides and a caribou foot coat rack will remind me of time spent in the field. I am not opposed to giving meat to the hungry. Any hunter who wants to hunt moose but does not like moose meat should feel obligated to find a use for ALL of it. Myself, and this is a PERSONAL PREFERENCE, hunting without the intention of using it seems more like killing than hunting. My chances to hunt and harvest animals are limited for several reasons but those limitations are not excuses to behave poorly. My conscience and I don’t agree on everything but we do on this one. Since I was a child I have always wanted to hunt in Africa. I was always told that every scrap of meat is used by the locals and benefits them in many ways. From what I hear on this thread, that seems to be the exception and not the rule. I guess I will have to wait until I am wealthy enough to bring the meat back before I hunt the Dark Continent. If I scrape up enough to go, then I'm bringing back as much as I can. I'm almost done rambling. One final thing..... I don't know how many of you know this but Alaska has about the best laws concerning waste of game animals that I know of. Here in NC there is a "wanton waste law" but the people it was made for don’t follow it and no one is interested in prosecuting it either. I enjoy reading the well spoken and intellectual material that you folks post here... Keep it up! -Joe Previous: A Meat Salvage Ethic Michael Strahan Dec 06 2005 Next: salvage part ll twodux Dec 08 2005 Message Thread:
