BEAR
Posted by Bighorse on Dec 12 2005
My first year here I was truckin down a loggin road in SE I came upon a cub to my left.  I readied my firearm and slowly backed off calmly saying  "hey bear".  I soon found where mom was she stood up, whoofed, and before I knew it was heading head long strait towards me.  I could have shot her, I didn't because I was educated and expecting the false charge.  Sure enough, I stood my ground, soon the brakes were on, she gathered her young and stood on the hill over looking me for a moment.  I yelled at her telling her I wanted to go goat hunting and she took off.  I then went up and shot a goat.
This year I got another goat and had the hide hung 150yrds from camp while I went up again to recover a blacktail I had shot the day before.  Upon return I  aproached camp cautiously saying "hey bear" and sure enough a sow with cubs was making there way into camp and quickly boogied away realizing there were humans.  I've encountered five others  hunting SE, All except the one I rugged ran away very, very fast.  This fall I had a very large bear stalk up on me based on scent, when he cleared the last final visual obstruction at about 25 yrds he was suprised to find two humans and quickly turned tail and ran.  I do believe in that case, if I was alone, that bear would have made himself a nusance.  I was close enough to watch him sneek in and watch his expression as he evaluated the situation.  It was the highlight of my trip, even after killing two great October Sitka Blacktail bucks.
The literature is out there to educate those traveling in Bear country.  Use it and travel in relative safety.
