Posted by AlaskaCub on Dec 12 2005 That was not me that was mauled (dont hex me) that was a guy I know and it happened in the late 70's on Kodiak and the bear is in our local grocery store full standing mount. As for the topic the reality for most all of us is that for the number of outdoorsman in Alaska resident and non-resident the encounters with bears are many but not on every trip and the number of actual attacks vs incidents is not comparible. In my experience which is actually quite a few most of my incidents go just like your told, stay cool and let the bear leave but be ready I have only seen one that wouldn't leave and crossed the safety distance and I arrowed that bear at 8 steps and then he ran away and died(only went about 30 yards) so I would say always be aware and like others said they dont all attack some bluff charge, some just walk in to get a better look and smell of you, and some haul a@@ at the sight of you.But always be ready for the one that has a loose screw!
