The Milepost is indispensable for information about where to get gas, but it can't give you up to the minute info. You can look at it and expect that the station it says is open 24/7/365 a few miles down the road where you plan to fill up suddenly went out of business. I limped in to civilization one Feb. trip on my younger years by pouring in gas line antifreeze (HEET) that I thankfully had along to "stretch" my gas. Probably didn't do my engine any good, but it never made a protest or had any problems afterwards. Maybe others mentioned this- a good heavy Carhartt suit and/or sleeping bag.
