Cat questions
Posted by AK Troutbum on Dec 12 2005
I have to agree with most of what Strahan said although I prefer NRS frames. I've lived, float hunted, and fished in Alaska for 15 years now using Aire catarafts for the last 13 years. I have owned three Aire cats: Wildcat, Ocelot 16', and Leopard. I have used these rafts to hunt and fish all over the state. Like Strahan, I think a Leopard is your best bet, although I don't have any personal experience with the Travelers. Contact Tracey at Alaska Raft and Kayak he uses Travelers quite a bit for his hunts and I'm sure could give you some good tips. Unfortunately frames for cats are heavy and with the exception of using netting for your floor/cargo module and maybe eliminating a bar here and there, there's nothing you can do about this. As I’m sure you know, portaging is not usually that enjoyable of an experience and if you are lucky enough to have a moose you probably won't consider yourself lucky anymore. I would strongly recommend doing a lot of research on rivers in the unit you are looking to hunt. Search the internet about info on particular rivers your interested in, ask people on this web site, and maybe contact fish and game wildlife biologist in the area your looking at hunting, they have a lot of info and from my experiences are very forthcoming with it. Good luck.
