bear and human CONfrontation...
Posted by Brian Richardson on Dec 12 2005
The bear and human CONfrontation is more frequently a war of words on this forum than clarity.

#1 Bears in the wilds of Alaska… whether they are in Parks, or in your back yards, or at fishin’ holes, or while skinnin’ & packin’ your game out, or the Anchorage Zoo, or just any place throughout the State of Alaska --- ARE UNPREDICTABLE (& can be dangerously volatile at any time or place) BY NATURE!

Education vs. Random occurrences:

Let’s just say you are decidedly experienced, carry and know how to use proper equipment, and strive to do everything considered to be right by accepted notion….  GREAT!

Now let’s envision the weekend warrior… having little to no real world Alaska experience, not a clue how to use suitable equipment (much less bring it), and minimally have modest familiarity of satisfactory wilderness conduct…

Is it “probable” that a Bear attack will occur in either case?  NO!  Opening the door to make it more possible?  Yes.

Is it “likely” that either case will trump the Random (we are talking hit & miss here) scenario of a genuine surprise attack in close quarter?  NO!!!

A few harms I see here brewing… I am not theorizing do whatever and be happy-go-lucky ‘cause it makes little difference.  What I am saying is that destiny is an engaging lure.

Awareness of Pressure on Species:

Just about all species sense it and will either deal or go to meet the maker.  Fact of survival until the end of time is being dealt the cards in a superior and adaptable way, by disagreeable attack, or giving up the ghost.

Additionally – you get the 80 – 20 package on bear…  In my experience 80 out of 100 will race away on human presence regardless of human activities & despite the behavior consequences of any pursuits.  The other 20 will go about doing whatever they were doing, some run away to a contented distance then look back, several stand up while standing ground, a few bluff run at you, likely many make some vicious noises w/ gesturing, or on rare incident will give full steam ahead charge.  In all probability 1 or 2 in 20 that even give YOU the awful feeling.

Then you get the human 80 – 20 package… in that a good number are slow on the uptake.  This is to speak that in the Bible it is said we will travel at the speed of thought if/when we get to Heaven --- well for some that’s pretty slow!

Why would I insert this detail?
1. Many do not believe or “bear” and practice w/ enough gun!
2. Many have no real world inkling or even witnessed enough bear activity to fittingly observe distinction in behavior!!
3. Many try to humanize whether or not a bear is smart, dumb, athletic, lazy, sensitive, in high spirits, horney, or pissed!!!  As a human being rule could this be all the above?
4.  I could not agree more than w/ Mike’s opinion of being at a loss for the #s of perceived charging bear shot at disagreeably perilous ranges.

Onto the statisticians… Without being disrespectful - I imagine these display case records say awfully little as to all the specific figures that are could be/would be/should be entries.
