Hunting Sheep in the Brooks Range!
Posted by powered-parachute on Dec 13 2005
Since there has been talk about sheep hunting in the Brooks Range I thought I would post my question and see if there are any opinions.  I am new to the list and can’t even remember how I stumbled on it but, what a great forum.  I live in Anchorage and have been here since 89.  For a long time I’ve wanted to hunt the Brooks for sheep and looked into air charters some years ago.  This question is for anyone with an opinion.

Assuming you could trailer your plane and pull it behind your truck.  You could fly off a long straight section of the haul road.  You could fly out of a large turn-out or most any gravel pit along the haul road system.  You could travel about 75+ miles before you had to set down to refuel.  You could carry 200+ lbs (400 if you had to) with you comfortably.  You could land and take off in around 50 yards, depending on the wind.  You could land on any terrain the best cub pilot could set down on and you had two weeks to do it, where would you go??  My partner and I are planning such a trip for next August.  We have just started doing the “home work” but haven’t even got as far as whether to hunt the east or west side of the haul road.  Knowing where the air services typically go and avoiding major base camps of the local guides would certainly be a good start.  Limiting factors would be that the best times to fly are typically early morning and later in the evening.  One shouldn’t fly through much if any rain and about 12 mile per hour wind is max to even think about a flight.  Any thoughts?

Phil
