I'm thinking if you're sleeping in a dry area--and the new tents/tarps are awesome in this respect--down could be fine.  Down is getting increased attention for mountain hunts.  Deservedly.
Lets face it, it's ridiculously light and collapsible, and more companies are offering water resistant liners.
I'm a bit lazy maintaining tent venting etc. and get a token amount of water vapor by morning and so synthetic works for me, some guys do very well with down by being a more proactive with that stuff.
