scent-sight
Posted by Byron_Lamb on Dec 15 2005
I have done a fair amount of Moose hunting, Moose watching, made some observations during various times of the year, and so on...
Its been my experince that the #1 "sight" hang-up that Moose, or Caribou, have is when they see you "sneeking". This is particularily noted if you're crouching low to the ground, or crawling, and they see you.
My personal opinion is that because Moose, and Caribou, are a prey spieces that they equate a "person" crouching, low to the ground/sneaking, with thier predator's, such as Wolf and/or Bear. In this case I have experinced Moose, and Caribou, in this situation that I viewed as "frightened", and obvioudly were putting as much distance between us as they coould; more so than just "seeing" a human walking upright.
We do a considerable amount of Moose hunting in thick timber. A popular hunting method is calling & raking. The overwhelming majority of the time when a Moose is coming to us, they will hang-up at some distance, 60-150 yards. At this point a lot of times they will remain MOTIONLESS, completey STILL, not moving a muscle, hardly even bliking thier eyes, for several minutes. Of course this several minutes can seem like hours. After this waiting period a lot of times they begin to circle, obvioulsy trying to pick up our scent.
That said, there are many varible factors; some of which include size of bull, what method we used to attrack the bull to us, terrain in the area, and so on.....
