Give away our tags????
Posted by Bigmnt on Dec 19 2005
To my knowledge, Wyoming is the only other state that requires a guide to hunt sheep, and that is only if you are hunting as a non-resident on designated wilderness.  To say that Alaska gives away tags is a bit short sighted. The guide requirement in Alaska is very cost prohibitive to non-resident hunters.  Right now, a non resident can go to Siberia and kill Sheep, bear, moose caribou etc. for less money and guarantees than he can do on many do it your selfer’s in Alaska. Not too mention Canada.

Mike and many other guides will tell you the importance of staying cost competitive and providing quality hunting and hunter satisfaction. After all the oil money dries up tourism and hunting/fishing are a big part of the economy.

Why drive away good paying customers with nonsense.  In my budget, I have to separate between needs and wants.  Wants loose out quite often as they should in Government.  Nobody has identified a legitimate need to increase tag fees as far as I can tell.  Just stick it to the Non-resident is the only thing I can gather out of this.

My buck fifty.
