What is best for the resource???
Posted by Akres on Dec 21 2005
I would like to pose a question to all the user groups on the forum. What activity is truly best for the game populations, in the long run? Sport Hunting or Subsistance Hunting?
Please do a little homework before you shoot from the hip on this one. How many species have been decimated or threatened by each activity? On North America, consider the following:
Bison
Beaver
Mammoth
Pigeon
Deer
Turkey
Bears of all sorts
Lions
On and On and On and On
Unabated subsistance hunting as most of the current federal regulations provide, will ultimately have severe negative impacts on all the game populations. Is it any wonder that the subsistance hunting issue will never be resolved, given that it carries such an extensive history of abuse and absolute disregard for the resources? The issue also is very devisive on the people. It polarizes user groups into classes. Tier One vs Tier Two

Subsistance User:  Eligible for hunting priveledge: Three year Alaskan resident, living in Glennallen, working for the local gas station at the hub. Renting a room from the owner, working for money under the table. Gets a hunting and fishing license for nearly free.

Sport Hunter:   Not elibible for hunting privelege: Fifty-two year old Alaskan, born and raised. Works in Anchorage for the Anchorage School District, responsible for educating young minds about the ways of the world and how to respect and treat one another. Pays lots of taxes that support all the forms of social dependance we have adopted. Pays full price for all licenses, yet knowing full well that they are very restrictive and will offer only limited opportunity to hunt.
YOUR THOUGHTS on how we can come together on this? Doubtful
