I was up there a week ago and the road was decent until after Chicken.  Just stay on the packed down part of the road.  After Chicken the road gets worse.  I drove to Chicken in 4 WD high (30 mph), but after, drove in 4 WD the rest of the way (10-15 MPH).  Chains would be nice and I had them but didn't put them on.  A snow machine would be ideal becuase you could get away from the road and see more country.  It seemed like everyone was getting there Caribou at mile 85 and in.  It will take 5+ hours to get back there.  Let me know if you have any other questions.
