Sheep
Posted by Sollybug on Dec 28 2005
Sheep hunting is my favorite topic and activity. Most people get tired of me talking about it. I end up doing mostly solo hunts for sheep now. The main reason seems to be that everybody I hunt with has been sheep hunting with me previously and is no longer interested in that activity. I say lets go sheep hunting and they say lets go moose hunting. I don’t like moose hunting. Last year I was discussing hunting with two former sheep hunting partners and I excitedly asked them to accompany me on a sheep hunt. I was laughed out of the room. One of them said he still had a scar on his forehead from our last hunt. We had hiked in off the road and built a rock carn to sleep in. During the night one of the large rocks in the shelter shifted and fell from its perch onto his forehead. The sheep we were hiking after were long gone when we woke up. The other guy reminded me of how on his hunt we hiked in through alder and mud only to watch it pour rain for three days and see no sheep. So neither of those guys was excited to repeat those experiences.  The weird thing is, those were fun hunts to me even though we didn’t harvest a sheep. If I came home with a trophy ram every time I am sure their interests would be renewed, but for now I mostly hunt sheep solo. When I do hunt solo I try to minimize risk. I never cross a glacier, cliff, snow bridge, make lots of noise in the alders, etc. I also take a SAT phone every time. And still I make mistakes and continue to learn safety….like the rock carn fiasco and many others.  TIP: to minimize scent hunting you can bathe in a creek or use antibacterial handiwipes in the tent. Is it any wonder a sheep runs when he smells a hunter who hasn’t bathed in a week?
