Caribou Meat
Posted by shipbum on Dec 28 2005
I have hunted same day Mulchatna caribou twice. My wife prefers wild game and supports a high-success hunt(more time for dad to spend with the kids!). Both outings I had success; although you can get skunked on this hunt. Near the end of the season they run from the planes and a long stalk is often needed.
Is this ethical-yes! Hunting historically is a meat activity. The April Caribou taste better than any bull during the "rack season". They are usually easy to kill and therefore clean, humane head shots are common. Less waste occurs when colder weather and quick transport are available.
I like to hunt because I receive a sense of accomplishment from field practice, clean kills, and processing my own meat. Although I do not judge rack hunters, I do not understand why a well managed meat hunt would be considered unethical.
