Remember that all goods and services are market driven. If Alaska rises the cost of tags will a hunter look other places. Both the Yukon and the Northwest Territories offer Dall sheep, moose and caribou hunting and the cost of tags are less than Alaskan and are priced in Canadian Dollars. What has caused the price of Big Horn tags in the Western States to be so expensive is that they are all on a draw system that takes 20 years of bonus points to draw with the exception of 4 hunting units in Montana which are unlimited.

A friend of mind ask me about Dall Sheep hunting and I recommended the Yukon. After some research he booked a trip and commented about how steep the mountains are in Alaska and from the outfitters web site pictures that the hunters had pictures of their sheep and horses together. He killed a 37 inch ram and rode the horses to the kill site. One can find a 2 caribou hunt for Central Barren Grounds Caribou in the Northwest Territories for $3500 to $4200 including 2 caribou tags and transportation from Yellowknife to Yellowknife. From what I have been reading a hunter will spend that much a non guided fly out caribou hunting trip in Alaska.

So remember that all efficient markets are elastic and that in the case of Alaska hunting there are substitutions.
