the Goat hunt
Posted by muskeg on Dec 28 2005
Goat hunts differ in weather, a lot. Depending on the region.

Here in South SE AK it does rain.

The 'new age' Gore-Tex is nothing like it used to be. But remember even purchasing a new product from a company does not mean it could be made from the old product.

That is one reason I like Swazi, for Gore-Tex and Fleece. Davie is on top of the newest development in rain wear and Fleece.

Peterstorm and Helly Hanson Impertech are very good light weight (rubber type) and tough rainwear.

My guide partner, Bob, wears Grundens. That is the more heavy type commercial rain wear, like the heavy Helly Hanson stuff. That stuff has always been to heavy for me for hunting.

I had one hunter wear FroggToggs and he blew the pants out in just a few days. And they are very loud. I have had several hunters wear Cabela's MT050 that were very disappointed and got very wet.

Actually you are going to get wet. Just stay as dry as possible for as long as possible. Synthetic layering is the key. We vacuum seal (or baggie seal) all clothing and things, then open them as needed.

I require all my Goat hunters to wear 'cork' boots. In many Goat areas this is probably not needed. But in this coastal rainforest there is wet slick footing where the Goats live. Snow fields requiring crampons is not an issue around here.

I think more hunters are injured on Goat hunts than any other. It is more important to be mentally prepared than physically prepared for the Goat hunt. Do not put yourself into a position that you cannot (or is very dangerous to) get out of.

Be careful and have a safe hunt ........ Johnnie
